Pisa, with its astonishingly beautiful Piazza dei Miracoli, the Leaning Tower, the Baptistery and its bridges over the Arno, is one of the most famous cities in Tuscany.

The Piazza dei Miracoli, the name given to the Piazza del Duomo, is Pisa’s most important centre for art and tourism. Numbered among World Heritage places by UNESCO since 1987, one can admire the monuments which form the epicentre of the city’s religious life, called miracles (by Gabriele d’Annunzio) for their beauty and originality: the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Churchyard and the characteristic Leaning Tower which dates from the XIIth century, is 55 metres, tall, and which acquired its incline immediately after work began on its construction.

On walking down one of the oldest roads in the city, one comes across the square which in medieval times was the centre of the civic and political scene of Pisa and which later became the symbol of Medici dominium: Piazza dei Cavalieri, seat of the Scuola Normale Superiore.

Walking along the banks of the River Arno one can admire, besides the palaces which belonged to the nobility, and the structures of the ancient tower-houses, the gothic style church of Santa Maria della Spina, the bridges and the Cittadella with its Guelfa tower. A walk down Borgo Stretto, a characteristic medieval road, should not be missed. This road, with its shops and elegant cafes, is the centre of Pisan life.
